Welcome to yet another insightful post from ICA ChiroCast: Sports & Fitness. I’m Dr. Brant Hulsebus, and today, we’re diving into the world of chiropractic care with a special focus on sports and fitness. In this session, we introduce Dr. Joe Amunategui, a veteran member of our board at ICA Sports and Fitness Council, who’s been a pivotal figure in our community since its inception.

Meet Dr. Joe Amunategui
Dr. Joe has been part of the ICA Sports Council since 1993 and holds the distinction of being one of the original board members and founding members. He proudly displays his ICA member certificate in his office, a testament to his commitment and longevity in the field of chiropractic care. As a second-generation chiropractor, Dr. Joe has deep roots in the profession, and his passion for chiropractic is evident in his dedication to preserving and teaching manual adjusting techniques.

Chiropractic Techniques for Athletes
One of the primary focuses of the ICA Sports and Fitness Council is to employ various chiropractic techniques to benefit athletes from all walks of life. From ballroom dancers to MMA fighters, and from soccer players to powerlifters, Dr. Joe highlights the importance of having a range of techniques to address the unique needs of each sport. He emphasizes the value of maintaining a diverse “tool belt” of techniques, ensuring that chiropractors can provide the best possible care to their patients.

Dr. Joe recounts his experience working with high-profile athletes, including collaborating with Angelo Dundee’s boxing teams and the Boxing Hall of Fame for Muhammad Ali. His unique techniques, passed down through generations, have proven invaluable to athletes seeking that competitive edge.

Interacting with Athletes
The way chiropractors interact with athletes differs significantly from interactions with other patients, such as mothers with young children. Dr. Joe stresses the importance of understanding an athlete’s goals and working towards achieving symmetry and balance in their bodies. A significant aspect of his approach involves strength testing with tools like the goniometer and techniques tailored to each athlete’s specific needs.

For example, Dr. Joe uses a hand grip from the world’s strongest men contests to measure improvements post-adjustment. The results speak for themselves—athletes consistently show measurable improvements, reinforcing the efficacy of chiropractic care.

Mentoring the Next Generation
Dr. Joe and I are both passionate about mentoring upcoming chiropractors. We are excited to offer programs that provide certifications in various chiropractic techniques. These programs aim to equip new chiropractors with the knowledge and skills necessary to differentiate themselves in their practices.

The impact of effective chiropractic care spreads quickly through the athlete community. When an athlete experiences improvement, it’s not long before their entire team seeks similar care. This ripple effect has the potential to grow practices and spread the benefits of chiropractic care far and wide.

Looking Forward
We’ve got an exciting lineup of podcasts and seminars planned, featuring conversations with other chiropractors and athletes. Our goal is to share the wealth of knowledge within our community and inspire a new generation of chiropractors committed to advancing the profession.

Before we wrap up, Dr. Joe has some parting words of wisdom: “Let’s keep chiropractic alive. Remember, ‘chiro’ is the Latin word for hand, meaning ‘done by.’ Let’s move some bones, take off that pressure, and help people live to their full potential. Knowledge is power, and we are here to share it.”

In conclusion, we are thrilled about the future of the ICA Sports and Fitness Science Council and invite you to join us on this journey. Stay tuned for more insightful discussions and updates. Don’t forget to subscribe and share this with your friends and fellow chiropractors.
